Do you know someone in the North East of England with Multiple Sclerosis? It’s estimated that there are more than 100,000 people diagnosed with MS in the UK, so it’s not unlikely that you do. If so, please help us to spread the word about the wonderful support available to them and their carers, free of charge.

We were invited to see and experience the recently updated facilities of the Multiple Sclerosis Research and Relief Fund (MSRRF) centre in Morpeth. The recent installation of a lift means the whole first floor is now accessible to their service users, doubling their space and greatly increasing their capacity to support and improve the quality of life of all people affected by Multiple Sclerosis.

A specially equipped gym with specialised equipment allows differentiated levels of support, to offer a bespoke exercise programme, accessible to everyone. Toning chairs, vibro-gyms and mot-med exercise bikes allow wheelchair users, those with limited mobility and those with non to keep moving and active. Qualified and experienced instructors are on hand to offer advice and support, as well running seated exercise classes to build strength and maintain and improve mobility.

Arts and Crafts activities give another opportunity for people to meet together with others, allowing opportunities for creativity, motor skills, companionship and improving self-esteem.

Complementary therapies are also available free of charge for those with MS and their primary carers. Activities such as Indian head massage, Pilates, Yoga, and Reflexology provide an opportunity to improve emotional well-being, reducing stress and tension, as well as having a positive physical impact.

Service users come from all over the region to use the facilities, and talk about the value of coming to a place that is equipped for meeting their physical needs, as well as supporting their emotional needs and helping to reduce isolation that can be associated with the condition.

As well as their Morpeth Headquarters, there are several other centres and outreach groups throughout the region, where people can be supported and advised closer to home.

Having worked at full capacity for several years, the recent growth in MSRRF’s facilities means they are now in the exciting position to support more people affected by a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. Please help spread the word and get support to those in our community who really need it!
