A few weeks ago we noticed a sign for the Bensham Community Food Co-op near our home, so we popped in to explore. We met the most wonderful people and learned about several exciting projects, that we’re keen to share.
The Bensham Community Food Co-op is a food bank with a difference. Run by the people who use it, it offers an element of choice and dignity. Unlike a traditional food bank, where food is pre-boxed and handed out to those in need of it, visitors are invited to choose one or two items from each section. Fresh fruit and vegetables on offer prove very popular, and ensure a more balanced and healthier diet for the people it serves.
A collaboration of 3 local charities- Bensham and Saltwell Alive, Peace of Mind and Soul Food Spaces– Bensham Community Co-op is available at Corpus Christi Church on Tuesdays from 10am-1pm. More than 30 families use it each week, and so they always welcome more donations.
Here are some of the items that would be particularly helpful:
- Vegetable Oil
- Fresh fruit
- Fresh vegetables
- Dried lentils or split peas
- Basmati rice
- Tinned pulses and beans
- Plain, gram and chapati flour
- Tinned tomatoes
- Pasta
- Spices- chili powder, chili flakes, turmeric, coriander powder, cumin seeds
- Dried herbs
- Salt
- Sugar
- Coffee, tea and herbal teas
Can you help some of our neighbours who are in financial hardship?
Donations can be left at Corpus Christi Church on Kelvin Grove in Bensham, or get in touch for a number to call to arrange an alternative drop off point or collection.
